Everything you need to know about the climate in Mauritius
Located in the Indian Ocean between the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, Mauritius benefits from a very pleasant tropical climate all year round. It has two main seasons: a temperate winter season with relatively dry weather and a wetter summer season. Although Paradise Island experiences some fluctuations in temperature throughout the year, the thermometer rarely falls below 18°C. What’s more, despite increased rainfall in the summer months, you can still enjoy sunny days and swim in the ocean all year round. Are you hoping to move there? Here’s all you need to know about Mauritius’ climate.
Winter in Mauritius: sunshine and mild temperatures
In the tropics, the period when rainfall is scarce and temperatures become milder is known as the “winter season”. As Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, its winter season is at the opposite time to that of Europe: it usually starts around May and ends in late October. Although it can hardly be classed as a drought, there are on average just 5 days of rain per month during this period. Temperatures vary between 19°C and 26°C and rarely rise above 28°C. July and August are the coolest months with an average of 21°C.
Winter in Mauritius is therefore the ideal season to enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities, from visiting different parts of the island and hiking in the rainforest to spending your days playing golf or surfing under the sun. Sports enthusiasts particularly enjoy this time of year thanks to the drier weather and pleasant, but not too hot, temperatures.
The rainy season in Mauritius
Summer in the southern hemisphere runs from November to April. During this period, the climate in Mauritius is rainier and temperatures are 5°C to 10°C higher than in winter. The rainy season starts in December and ends in April, but January, February and March are the wettest months by far with between 150 and 300mm of rainfall per month.
This monsoon season is also the hottest period, with temperatures hovering between 26°C and 27°C. Cyclones occasionally hit Mauritius in late summer (between February and April). But let’s not forget that in the tropics it usually rains in short bursts and the sun reappears in no time. There is certainly no shortage of good weather during Mauritius’ summer season. It is also the best time to swim and go diving in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, especially during the months of November and December when the rain eases off somewhat.
The climate in different areas of Mauritius
As with most tropical islands, the Mauritian climate is not the same in all areas. As Paradise Island is in the path of the trade winds, which blow from east to west, the east and south coasts are the most exposed. Cooled by a stronger breeze, these areas also receive more rainfall. During the winter, the temperature can be 2°C to 3°C lower in the east, whereas in summer the amount of rainfall doubles compared to the leeward coasts. However, on account of its rugged terrain, it is the central region that receives the most rainfall with almost 2000mm per year.
The climate of the west coast of Mauritius: a sheltered location
Due to its lesser exposure to the trade winds and stormy weather, the west coast of Mauritius, which is naturally sheltered, benefits from more sunshine and has a much more stable climate than other parts of the island. During the winter season, temperatures in the west of the island are warmer and more pleasant: in August (the coolest month of the year), the average temperature in Tamarin is 22°C compared to 20°C on the east coast. During the summer, rainfall occurs less frequently than elsewhere and annual rainfall does not exceed 800 mm. Thanks to its milder climate, the west coast is at a real advantage, making it particularly attractive to people looking to relocate to Mauritius.
